HEADS UP UP ON PRIZES THAT DRIPPED BLOOD AND REMEMBERING SANDOR ELES

REMEMBERED: TODAY WE REMEMBER Hungarian born actor SANDOR ELES…. Known for a lot of work on TV he guest starred in shows such as The Saint, One Step Beyond, The Avengers, Danger Man and a regular role in the UK Soap 'Crossroads'. Eles did a lot of good and interesting work, given the chance. He made appearances in The Avengers, The Professionals Strange Report and Upstairs, Downstairs. One of his most memorable film roles was as the mysterious Paul in the Brian Clemens thriller 'And Soon the Darkness' in 1970. The screenplay was written by Brian Clemens and Terry Nation, both of whom had contributed to The Avengers, as well as to several ITC crime series made in Britain. The film was directed by Robert Fuest.

ABOVE: You can read more about SANDOR ELES and his work in #Hammerfilms 'The Evil of Frankenstein' in a feature written for PCAS by Troy Howath, at the time of it's first time release on blu ray from Final Cut. It's complete with a gallery of great publicity stills rarely seen form the PCAS archive RIGHT HERE!

ELES CO STARRED with #PeterCushing in #Hammerfilms third Frankenstein film,  'The Evil Of Frankenstein' and presented a quite different style of Baron's assistant. Sympathetic and sensitive to the Baron's plight and dedication to his work, it was an angle that didn't arrive again until Shane Briant's excellent portrayal of Simon in 'Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell' from Hammer films in 1974.

ABOVE IS A PHOTOGRAPH is a still I thought Frankenstein and Hammer fans would appreciate! It's a never before shared or published studio photographer still during the making of the Peter Cushing and Sandor Eles Hammer films 'The Evil of Frankenstein' in 1963 at Bray studios. Cushing and Eles can be seen at the back of the marquee tent, with their mask disguises, but note the top of the still. It just shows how LOW in height the back lot buildings were at Bray studios. The lighting, the rigging and boom microphone is just a few feet from the actors heads!!!

ELES WAS IN MANY WAYS a jobbing actor, but capable of so much more, just watching his work as Paul Ross in the UK low budget, but extremely popular almost daily soap opera, 'Crossroads' from 1982 until 1985, he gave more than any of the scripts required. A guest role as himself in the film 'Surviving Picasso' 1996, is a raw and sad exit, for an highly skilled actor, who when given the chance on screen or stage, was anyone but himself....

SANDOR ELES, sadly died on September 4th 2002, in Kilburn, London. He was just 66 years old . .

WHAT KATY DID AFTER HER EVIL STINT AND VERY GRIM FIGURE IN FRANKENSTEIN AND ITS NOT FROM THE LAB!

#GETTHECUSHIONSUNDAY! Here's pretty neat, large hi res photograph, taken by the publicity stills camera man. This would have been cropped out by the magazine or newspaper editor. But if you look carefully, as well as the lovely Katy Wild in this shot on the back lot set of Cushing's 'The Evil of Frankenstein' at Bray studios, the Baron appears to live quite close to a 1960's railway line... and the large 1964 Bedford truck top right, maybe keeping the engine running, to give the Baron, his goods and chattels a quick get away maybe?

A QUESTION on the PCASUK FACEBOOK FAN PAGE TODAY promoted the banner above, after posting the Katy Wild behind the scenes photograph, from 'THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN'

EDWARD MORLEY asks:
'Wasn't she an actress from 'The Horror of Frankenstein' and later moved to Australia? I am sure she was in a mini series called 'Spy Force'. A really lovely actress'.

WE ANSWERED:
'You are right, Edward. Katy appeared in Spy Force as Lieutenant French! The series, as you say was Australian and ran for two series. Actress Kate O'Mara appeared in 'The Horror of Frankenstein' (1970) with Ralph Bates and Veronica Carlson, sadly no Katy though. I've posted some items from the series and two pics of her, in a banner for you above....

EDWARD REPLIED:
'Oh Wow! Thank you so very much for the update and info. Just so many wonderful actresses and hopefully still with us.

AND FINALLY, a post that prompted much laughter at the PCASUK FACEBOOK FAN PAGE yesterday . . .The next time you are watching Peter Cushing's second installment in the Hammer films Frankenstein series, 'The Revenge of Frankenstein' . .. take a look at the REAL monster sitting in the corner of the room, during the meeting of the medical committee. Those who say the film didn't really have a monster, need to feast their eyes on THAT lump of plaster, that I think is trying to allude to the Greek Venus de Milo by one, Alexandros of Antioch . . . I have a feeling this one was created in ten minutes at the Hammer carpentry and plaster shop by the great 'Bert of Cheswick', after a liquid lunch at the local hostelry just outside Bray studios! I almost feel like shouting 'Behind YOU!' to Cushing! BLIMEY! . . .N.B Many of you also mentioned that this 'statue' also appears almost five years later, in Hammer films, THE GORGON (1964), in the foyer entrance of Castle Borksky!

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY AND #FRIDAYNIGHTDILEMMA

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: WE KICKED OFF this week's / morning's #FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY with this fine photograph of Peter Cushing taking a moment to reflect, on the set of 'Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell' (in production at Elstree studios from 18th September until 13th November 1973) I LOVE this photograph. I LOVE the film too. Maybe the lease popular of the Cushing / Hammer / Frankenstein series, with fans. Looking over the stats for this film when posted here on this page too, the performance is a little lack-luster too! I can never figure out why this film gets such a poor reception? Surely the WIG can't be that a huge problem it affects, the enjoyment of the film that badly? Maybe...someone can tell me why???

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: The Evil of Frankenstein (1963) was Peter Cushing's only Frankenstein movie for Hammer films, that wasn't directed by Terence Fisher. There is no connection  to the previous Frankenstein Hammer films, The Revenge of Frankenstein'  A flashback creates a prior history that is wholly unrelated to the last Sangster Frankenstein script.  For the U.S. television release there were additional scenes added, on finding that the film was some 15 mins short of the average movie  time slot on US TV.. this would have an impact on the space available for TV advertisements!  The INSERTS featured characters that didn't appear in the original film and have no inter-action with the main characters. Patrick Horgan plays a reporter who questions a doctor (Steven Geray) about Baron Frankenstein. There are also scenes of the deaf-mute girl (Tracy Stratford) and her parents (Maria Palmer and William Phipps), none of whom ever appear in the film again.....!

A NEW WEEKLY feature for a Friday night.....#THEFRIDAYNIGHTDILEMMA. The perfect birthday gift for your Cushing Fan Friend. BUDGET £10 (US $6) - £25. (US $12) Suggestions PLEASE!

SYMPATHY FOR FRANKENSTEN: PETER CUSHING 'THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN' (1964)

One of the few entries in the Hammer Films saga where you feel more than a little sympathy for Peter Cushing's Baron. 'When will they ever leave me alone' a reference to the ever present rampaging villagers and authorities who always seem to be his undoing in the end. The Evil of Frankenstein was Peter Cushing's third appearance as Baron Frankenstein for Hammer Films in 1964.
