THE PHANTOM IS BLOWING THE CITY WHILE THE ISLAND IS SUCKED DRY!

NO THIS ISN'T A LONG LOST  #PeterCushing film 😄 . . but the touches of Cushing, Hammer and Tigon films are all over it! Think, 'The Blood Beast Terror' 😉 I've love this series since I was a child... and yes, my children love too! I have a son who's middle name is borrowed from it's writer, Spike Milligan, who originally wrote this for his mate, Peter Sellers. Eventually it found it's way into Ronnie Barker's tv series, 'Six Dates with Barker' (ITV 71) , then being re-written for Barker and Ronnie Corbett's 'The Two Ronnie's BBC tv series in 1976, as a weekly instalment. It's silly, maybe rude (?) some of the other episodes are a little un-pc now, but then Spike always was a rule unto himself, which is why I love him still. The episode you'll find on the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE is episode one, where Peter kind of gets a mention as does Vincent too 😊 Trivia: Spike worked with Cushing in the 1960 film, 'SUSPECT' aka 'THE RISK' Spike also provided the 'raspberries' SFX himself!

OUR SECOND #WATCHWITHCUSHING! today is, a CLASSIC and a huge favourite among followers and Cushing fans alike, 'ISLAND OF TERROR' made in 1966 and directed by Terence Fisher. If ever there was a film that proves you should never trust your vacuum cleaner... THIS is it! Peter gets to do some 'fight the monster' in this one! And what a MONSTER! For years the Silocates, have been up there with other first class cinematic 'creatures from another world' creations like the brain things from ' Fiend Without A Face'. They been available and stocks sold out, when made into figures and models for collectors... even as fridge magnets!

THERE'S LOTS TO LIKE about this film, great monster, a very good cast with Edward Judd beefed up, Cushing providing the investigative brains, so when asked giving the right answers to anyone in the audience who can't keep up and Carole Gray does very well and offers much more than a 'helpless female, who is permanently set on 'scream'! Fisher's directing is tight and it all clicks. Granted NO living creature who looks like he has sat in on too many McDonald's 'all you can eat' early bird offers, should be able to climb a tree... and if he did and fell on some some guy, THAT guy should be one very FLAT pancake! I hope you enjoy the contents of our PCASUK Watch Party uploads today! Come join in, pull up a chair, bring some snacks and we will have fun 😉😊 Please take care everyone! - Marcus

REMEMBERING VAL GUEST TODAY BORN DECEMBER 1911

HONORING the director Val Guest on today (what would have been his 101st birthday) is a pretty tough thing to do. After all, this is the man who gave us Hammer Horror, without the smash success of The Quatermass Xperiment and its sequels and follows up, we wouldn’t have had The Curse of Frankenstein and the gothic boom that followed. It’s a well-known fact that Quatermass creator Nigel Kneale had his differences with Guest in terms of his interpretations of the story, but the film itself is a masterpiece of British Sci-Fi Horror and perfectly captures a bleak post-war world. During my time at university I wrote a dissertation covering the post-war themes within the Quatermass television series and films and spent a great deal of time defending Guests adaptation. His Quatermass’s strength lies in its difference to the TV version, non-more explicit than it it’s titular hero…or in Guest’s eyes Villain. In his vision, Quatermass becomes an inhuman monster, representing the dangers of science. The world he inhabits is shown to the audience in an almost ‘documentary’ style, infusing it with a gritty realism. The next-two sci-fi horror films Guest did for Hammer, Quatermass II and The Abominable Snowman, were also adapted from Kneale screenplays and have a disturbing realism to them.

QUATERMASS II is, at least in my humble opinion, a massive improvement on its television predecessor, exorcising a somewhat frivolous space-journey at its climax that only served to undo all the tension built up to this point. With a somewhat softer Donlevy and several shocking and disturbing moments (‘they blocked the pipe with human pulp!’) it’s another classic. One of his best and easily my favourite of his science fiction films is his memorable collaboration with Peter Cushing, The Abominable Snowman. Adapted from Nigel Kneale’s The Creature, it’s a mesmerising exercise in a slow building sense of claustrophobic tension. All the more admirable considering the films set in vast snowy plains. Guest gets the best out of his performers and by keeping the Yeti mostly off screen, they become a genuinely frightening presence.

PETER CUSHING'S CO-STAR, EDWARD JUDD FROM ''ISLAND OF TERROR'' STARS IN 'THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE' GREAT GALLERY AND REVIEW:  HERE!

IT SEEMS unfair to just discuss these films though when Guest had a rich and varied career within the British film industry. Of course his most famous film is probably, 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire', another science-fiction film that adopts the same documentary eye as his previous works and tells the story of what happens when the earth begins to overheat. He was one of the directors on the masterpiece of mess that is the 1967 version of 'Casino Royale', and this was by no means his first stab at comedy either, having director both Up the Creek and Further up the Creek. Two of his best however were once again for Hammer, both war pictures and films that manage to be almost the opposite of each other.

BARBARA SHELLEY IN VAL GUEST'S 'THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND' (1958)

'THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND' is a brutal tale of the horrors of a Japanese prisoner of war camp that caused quite a stir on its release in 1958. The following year came Yesterday’s Enemy, a film which Val Guest often said he was most proud. Based on a BBC teleplay it’s still a criminally unknown film, which is a shame as it’s a masterpiece. Featuring stunning performances from Stanley Baker, Guy Rolfe, Leo Mckern and Gordon Jackson, the film features no incidental music for the entirety of its run time. A relentlessly depressing film, it shows the horrors of war as they are and doesn’t shy away from condemning both the British and their enemies. In my opinion it’s Guest’s best and film that, if you have yet to see it, deserves your attention

GIFS: GIFS : PETER AND THE WOLF! ANDRE AND THE VAMPIRE RARE HAMMER POSTER AND A BIRTHDAY!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: TIS BUT A FLESH WOUND! Not in this case, me thinks. Peter Cushing as Dr. Christopher Lundgren, isn't that a great name, reacts to Calvin Lockheart's giveaway injury. That's no dog. And the set up has kick started the plot, that will take us on one of Amicus films, most inventive outings, 'THE BEAST MUST DIE' (1974). Most Cushing fans know of the legendary 'WEREWOLF BREAK', but you'll get no more from me. Other than, it's 'Ten Little Soldiers' meet 'Big Game Hunting', and a twisty CLUEDO, once the howling cues in, the hairy one. Thanks to Margaret Manley, for her request for, '..Anything from the film, with Peter and the Wolf'... I DO hope she means, THIS film...!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! FOR MANY, it's the Hammer Dracula film, that runs a very close second, to Hammer first, 'HORROR OF DRACULA' / 'DRACULA' (1958) even though, it contained neither Christopher Lee nor Dracula! But, it did have, Cushing returning as Van Helsing, the beautiful and vulnerable Yvonne Monlaur, the spectacularly ghoulish Andre Melly, creepy Martitia Hunt, really frightening Freda Jackson . . . and David Peel, as not Count, but BARON Meinster. Often in a classic vampire flick, the 'ladies of the night' NO not those, but THESE of the nocturnal fanged variety, are relegated to the we'll see you again, maybe, later plot props. Not so in Hammer films, The Brides of Dracula, and certainly not in the case of young Gina. But, hey I am jumping ahead of myself. All that comes later. Here we see her shocked to the core. No, it isn't Christopher Lee, it's David Peel, as the dastardly Meinster, who by now, is making his mark on the young snacks, of the attendees of the local Transylvania, girls prep school. Meinster picked his ladies well. Melly's performance is sexy, powerful and a game changer. Semi see though clothing, check! Deathly pallor, check! Fangs, indeed!  A presence that could stop a clock, much so! It would sometime, before a young, Polish-British actress named Ingoushka Petrov, would carry the female vampire, to the next level. . . . Many thanks to Matthew Bryan, for the suggested #GIF!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! You have to give Peter Cushing's GUSTAV credit, he is pretty efficient, and nothing phases him. Here poor ol Judy Matheson, sobs and screams, begs for mercy, but Gustav doesn't falter. 'TWINS OF EVIL' (1971)  the first film, that  Peter Cushing had on the slate, when returning to work, a mere three months, after his wife, Helen passed away. He needed he said, to busy. To fill time. Not to be distracted, but to be of use.

CONFUSED? TWINS WENT THROUGH THREE CHANGES OF TITLE!

Hammer's third dip into the Karnstein pot, TWINS presented Peter with exactly that. A role that took a great deal of concentration, as few roles could be further away, from the character of the  mild, mannered Peter Cushing. His efforts and energies resulted him appearing in a staggering NINE films from June 1972 to December 1973. Not all gold standard films, but you can be sure, Cushing's efforts, were never less than reliably highly entertaining, and often the highlight of the movie. Not seen TWINS OF EVIL? Below is a link to a feature to temp...! Thank you to MARVIN 'StrangeOne' VALDEZ, Chicago, IL for the requested #GIF
